Bone Marrow Transplants Remove All Sign of HIV in Two Men

Bone Marrow Transplants Remove All Sign of HIV in Two Men

It's turning into quite a year for HIV treatment. First a baby girl was functionally cured of the HIV virus, then 14 adults were successfully treated with early-stage ARV drugs. Now, two men with longstanding HIV infections have been freed from HIV drugs thanks to bone marrow transplants. We're really getting there.

The two men?one of whom became infected with HIV "in the early years of the epidemic", the other as a baby?were given bone marrow transplants at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Centre in Boston to treat cancers of the blood. But tests have since shown that, as their cells were replaced by those from a donor, the level of HIV virus present in their bloodstreams steadily dropped until it became undetectable.

The men have since stopped taking antiretroviral medication?and there's been no sign of the virus returning. Doctors haven't been able to identify the HIV virus in their tissue either?but since it's able lay dormant at low levels and later become active, the pair are being monitored closely. The research was presented at the International Aids Society conference in Kuala Lumpur this week.

It's not the first time bone marrow transplants have been used to treat HIV. Back in 2010 a patient in Berlin underwent a similar procedure, receiving marrow from a donor who had genetic resistance to HIV. Such donors are incredibly hard to find, though?so the latest results, which used normal donors, is an exciting new development.

That isn't, however, to say it's a practical one. There's a 15-20 percent mortality rate tied to marrow transplants, and even then the drugs used to suppress immune reaction against the donor cells can cause problems for patients?especially those with HIV. But let's not do down what is an amazing medical discovery. While we should still be cautious about claiming we can cure HIV, it's beginning to look more and more likely that it could be the case. Ubisoft security breach exposes user data, Uplay account holders urged to change passwordsUbisoft security breach exposes user data, Uplay account holders urged to change passwords

If you've ever signed up for a Uplay account, your information could now be in the hands of criminals. Ubisoft's confirmed that a security breach at one of its sites, now closed, has granted hackers access to sensitive user data (i.e., usernames, emails and passwords). Critically, no actual financial information was leaked, owing to the fact that Ubisoft doesn't retain personal credit or debit card account numbers on its servers. Regardless, the Assassin's Creed developer is taking proactive measures, contacting account holders directly and strongly advising them to update any related passwords. You can find the full email just after the break.

Protocells may have formed in a salty soup

July 2, 2013 ? The first cell may have originated in a salty soup in which large biomolecules cluster spontaneously to form a protocell, chemists at Radboud University Nijmegen discovered.

The research is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

How did the first cell originate in evolution? It is a chicken or the egg causality dilemma: a cell doesn't function without a cell wall, but how does the cell wall form if there is no cell? Research by chemist Wilhelm Huck, professor at Radboud University Nijmegen, suggests that the cell came first.

In a solution containing the biomolecules that are normally locked in a cell (like DNA, RNA, enzymes, proteins) these large biomolecules clustered together spontaneously when the salt concentration was increased. This indicates that a cell wall is not a prerequisite for a cell-like structure .

Huck thinks the macro molecules in our cells evolved to do their work while packed closely together. By using tiny droplets, he explores how this works exactly. "When biomolecules are packed together, we expect reactions to proceed much faster. They perform their chemistry much more efficiently. In this study, we measure a fifty-fold increase in the DNA transcription rate."

A working cell is more than the sum of its parts. "A functioning cell must be entirely correct at once, in all its complexity," said Huck. "We are now closer to building a synthetic cell than anyone ever before us."
