KU Cancer Center increases use of stem cell to treat older patients

Staff Kansas City Business Journal

The University of Kansas Cancer Center increasingly is using stem cell transplants on patients once thought too old for the cutting-edge treatment, The Lawrence Journal-World reports.

The center?s Blood and Marrow Transplant program now uses stem-cell transplants to treat patients in their 60s, 70s and 80s with conditions like acute myeloid leukemia, the report says. The center is on track to perform about 300 transplants this year, compared with fewer than 50 in 2006.

The KU Cancer Center received National Cancer Institute designation a year ago. Director Dr. Roy Jensen told the Kansas City Business Journal in a recent interview that his sights now are set on boosting the center?s status to that of a comprehensive cancer center.
