Obama signs Ex-Im Bank bill into law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has signed legislation that renews the charter of the Export-Import Bank for three years and increases the bank?s lending cap to $140 billion from the current $100 billion. The bank is the government?s vehicle for promoting U.S. export sales.

Obama says the move will help thousands of businesses sell their products and services overseas and help them create jobs at home. The president says the independent federal agency is a key factor toward reaching his goal of doubling exports over five years.

Lawmakers passed the legislation earlier this month amid resistance from conservatives who argued that the bank distorts the market. The bank had support from numerous business groups. Last year it provided about $32 billion in loans, loan guarantees and credit financing, helping support 290,000 jobs.

Caribbean News Now!: Barbados international business sector ...

By Julia Rawlins-Bentham

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (BGIS) -- Barbados's international business sector continues to do well, despite its challenges.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said last Friday that the sector continued to maintain its reputation as a transparent, well-regulated, responsible and user friendly destination where investors could carry on a wide range of business activities.

He was at the time addressing the opening ceremony of an International Business Stakeholders' Consultation.

"Barbados has become well known to the international investor community as an attractive jurisdiction of choice," he said.

He added that in the face of challenging economic conditions, Barbados' international business sector continued to show signs of improvement, with moderate growth being recorded in the licensing of entities over the last three years.

"The ever-changing pace of the global economic landscape stimulated by the financial crisis presents unique and interesting opportunities that companies and governments around the world must grasp," Stuart said.

He pointed out that Barbados remained focused and committed to exploring opportunities to maximise the island's global competitiveness, and generate return on investment.

To this end, Stuart noted that there were improvements and expansion in the island's legislative framework which provided generous incentives, greater flexibility for investors and competitive working conditions to facilitate international business activities.

These activities include international technology, manufacturing and oil and gas production.

The prime minister said amendments to existing legislation, such as the Income Tax (Exchange of Information) Regulations; the Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (Prevention and Control) Act; the Financial Services Commission Act; the International Corporate and Trust Service Providers Act; and the Companies (Amendment) Act, were made to enhance the country's overall framework for the exchange of information.

Meanwhile, he noted that other legislative reforms were undertaken last year, while others were still being considered to further enhance the country's regulatory and legislative framework as it relates to the exchange of information.

"The legislative framework is bolstered by an ever expanding tax and investment treaty network which is instrumental not only in securing long-lasting relations between countries, but, more importantly in providing exceptional opportunities for companies and individuals seeking comparative advantage in the global marketplace," Mr. Stuart said.

Barbados presently has 31 double taxation treaties in force with major countries and trading parties.

Stuart further noted that government was aware of global and regional challenges faced by the international business sector, and gave the assurance that efforts were being made to improve institutional mechanisms to address some of the issues.

Financing Graduate School Education | Prime Rates

Posted

by Alan Edwards

on May 29th, 2012 in Student Loans | 0 comments

Students continuing their education after college are likely to find that they will be financing graduate school themselves. No worries ? there are a number of resources available to finance a graduate education. Most grad students get financial help in the way of fellowships, employer tuition reimbursement, loans that are private or federal and teaching or research positions at the school they are attending. Countless graduate students use a combination of these kinds of financial aid.

Grants and Fellowships

Fellowships and grants are sought after financial award that do not require or ask for repayment. Usually they are offered by a school, an organization or even the federal government. They cover complete or partial tuition and may include an allowance for living expenses. Generally they are given based on a combination of academic merit and financial need. Often, grants and fellowships are used to attract a specific demographic such as women or minorities.

Teaching Assistant Positions

Some graduate students are employed as Teaching Assistants or TAs. Working about 20 hours per week during the academic year they are paid in the form of financial aid. A TA may lead discussion groups and lab sections of undergraduate courses taught by the school?s faculty.

Research Assistants

A research assistant is usually found in in scientific and engineering fields. These positions have a graduate student work on a research project. As compensation the student gets paid tuition and a stipend for living expenses.

Employer Tuition Reimbursement

A large number of employer offer full or partial tuition reimbursement for their employees attending graduate school. Check with your company?s Human Resources department to find out if they offer tuition support and what the conditions of that support are.

Federal Work-Study Program

Work-study programs provide part-time jobs for students who are enrolled in graduate school. Whenever possible, the work involves community service or is related to the student?s field of study.

Federal Graduate Student Loans

Graduate students who can prove financial need can be eligible to apply for federal loans. Depending on need the loan can be subsidized. If it is a subsidized federal loan interest does not begin to accrue until the loan repayment starts. Unsubsidized federal loans accrue interest from the time the money is first loaned to the student. There are three kinds of federal loans for graduate students:

 • Stafford Loans
 • Perkins Loans ? administered by the school
 • PLUS Loans

Loan Forgiveness Programs

Graduate students can have their federal loans forgiven if they work in public service or for a non-profit organization. This is a great option for financing a graduate degree. These programs are sponsored by schools, state government and the federal government. In return for working a specific length of time following graduation a student gets a fixed percentage of loan repayment.

Private Loans

Private loans should be the last resort for financing graduate school education. They have higher interest rates and usually begin to accrue interest while the student is at graduate school.

PREP BASEBALL: Things go awry for Paramount

Late miscues doom Pirates in Division III quarterfinal.

LA VERNE - It wasn't so much that Paramount had just lost its CIF Southern Section Division III quarterfinal playoff game 2-1 at top-seeded Bonita that had most of the Pirates players in tears following the game.

It was the way they lost that had coaches and players emotionally rattled and dazed.

Paramount (19-10) took Bonita (29-2) down to the wire, but saw a slew of things not go its way.

Three potential Paramount singles to right field became 9-3 putouts, two Pirates runners were thrown out at the plate and Bonita's sixth-inning run was a gift.

Paramount ace Alex Navarette had just gotten Justin Row to ground out to lead off the bottom of the sixth and then got Bonita ace Justin Garza to hit a ground ball to second for what looked to be out No. 2.

But Lalo Saucedo couldn't field the ball and Garza reached base.

After the third pickoff attempt at first base on Garza, Paramount first baseman Fernando Rios tossed the ball back to Navarette and Garza darted toward second without a play.

It proved costly as Thomas Castro then hit a line-drive base hit to score Garza to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning.

Frankie Valenzuela led off with a single, and Steven Espinoza followed with a ground ball that found its way into shallow right field.

But instead of having first and second with no outs, Bonita right fielder Joe Willard picked up the ball and gunned

Espinoza out at first.

With Valenzuela at second and one out, Randy Buenrostro laced a line drive shot to left for what most thought was going to be first-and-

third with one out, but Paramount's third-base coach waved Valenzuela home and the Bonita left fielder hit his cutoff man, who pegged Valenzuela at the plate by at least eight feet.

Pinch-hitter Alan Tapia came on to hit with one on and two out and Garza closed the game out with his seventh strikeout.

"You have to give credit to Bonita, because they made plays when they had to and they always seemed to be positioned exactly where they should be," Paramount coach Cameron Chinn said. "I've never seen three guys thrown at first base like that."

Navarette was outstanding, as the senior lefty allowed just one earned run over 5<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>3 innings and surrendered just four hits.

Bonita took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Nolan Henley doubled to start the inning and Connor Renard singled to give the Bearcats first and third with no outs.

Navarette, however, got Jacob Blunt to ground into a 4-6-3 double play that allowed Henley to score. Navarette then struck out Tanner Diebold to end the threat and the inning.

Saucedo led off the top of the sixth with what looked to be a base hit to right, but Willard came up huge again with a putout at first.

Aaron Pleitez then walked and Jesus Caporal's single to left gave the Pirates first and third with one out. After Caporal stole second to put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out, Eric Cruz hit a ground ball to short, and Pleitez was nailed at the plate.

Fernando Rios, though, clutched up and singled home Caporal to tie the game just before Joseph Torres struck out.

Garza was hitting 93 on the radar Friday, and improved to 11-1 this season and 24-1 over the past two years. The senior right-hander allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven.

Rios had two hits for the Pirates.

"I am so proud of these kids for battling and thought Alex Navarette was outstanding as he's been all year," Chinn said. "Alex pitched in every tough game we played in and gave us a chance to win in each of those games."

Seeking the Most Effective Forex Trading Program

What exactly is Forex trading?

Currency trading is short for the foreign currency market, that is a global economic market place wherever foreign currencies are bought and sold. The foreign currency market commenced inside the 1970s and is the greatest economic industry on the planet, having an typical daily turn over involving US$1.Nine trillion. That is 30 instances the quantity of day-to-day exercise on every one of the Us all stock markets.

Every single Foreign exchange trading requires together buying one forex and also promoting another. As an example, if you think that the actual Pound may go up in accordance with the actual greenback, youll spot any Euro/Dollar buy and sell. Your foreign exchange method would after that buy the Dinar and then sell a similar amount of the Buck. Next, when you need to close your situation, youll place the Dollar/Euro industry. This would find the Greenback and then sell on your Euro. In the event the Pound got increased up against the Money, youd probably generate income, but if the idea experienced decreased in accordance with the Greenback youd probably create a decline.

Precisely what currencies tend to be dealt?

Most of the globes stock markets are available to industry, however the tastes industry activity requires a gaggle of main values, such as People Dollar, the Pound, the Pound, the actual Switzerland Franc as well as Sterling.

Wheres the Forex market positioned?

In contrast to the majority of stock markets worldwide, Foreign exchange isnt centralized with an swap. As an alternative this operates on the foundation referred to as interbank marketplace or older your Counter (Non-prescription). While every single Forex trade entails 2 reciprocal investments (acquire one currency exchange then sell another), these are performed electronically with any kind of agent who is prepared to recognize your industry.

Who is able to buy and sell within the Foreign exchange market?

Typically, usage of currency trading has been restricted to financial organisations, which includes central financial institutions, industrial financial institutions and also purchase finance institutions. Thats the reason this runs using something referred to as the interbank market.

However, the quantity of low financial institution individuals inside Forex market, such as international businesses, cash supervisors, cash brokers and private investors, is increasing rapidly. And thanks to the particular fairly little bit of capital needed to open an investing bank account (frequently $500) Forex will be opening in order to a lot more people on a regular basis. If you are more than 18, have internet connection your enough funds to open up an investing account, the field of Forex trading is actually accessible to you.

When is forex available pertaining to investing?

While Currency trading wont exist inside a conventional change, it does not take only Round the clock financial market place in the world. Currency trading will begin every day within Sydney then movements world wide since the key worldwide real estate markets within Tokyo, Greater london as well as The big apple available.

Put simply, theres always traders anywhere in the world who will be definitely investing foreign currency echange. Which means you will make positions and reply to key sociable, economic and also political occasions nite and day. Nevertheless, there exists a brief relaxation interval coming from shut regarding exchanging for the United states economic market upon Friday till investing will begin in Australia on Mon morning hours. Nonetheless, due to the period distinctions around the globe, this era just lasts for about A couple of days.

Just what is an exchanging margin?

Forex trading investments come in plenty of $100,500. When you present that will amount of money to hide your situation prior to deciding to might trade, the market industry would always once again always be on a banks along with other institutional people. So broker agents established the principle associated with border exchanging. In essence they enable visitors to buy and sell $100,Thousand hindrances involving currency exchange if they can provide an part of security in opposition to possible deficits.

For instance, they will often allow visitors to industry on the edge involving 1% (in contrast, conventional stock agents usually demand a 50% border). This means that they are able to industry $100,Thousand obstructs, furnished his or her account includes at the very least $100,1000 x 1% = $1000. One thousand dollars will guard your specialist towards any potential loss that their client can make (foreign currency values hardly ever go up and down by simply a lot more than 1% within a morning). If your buyers accounts will be reduced simply by losses (we.e. lowering the brokers security under appropriate ranges), the particular dealer can close just about all investments and also demand an additional deposit just before more deals can be created.

Exchanging margin lets people to manage huge amounts of foreign currency wiith fairly small amounts of capital (often Fifty, A hundred or even 200 instances the quantity of funds that they have put in). This can lead to substantial results, however increases the likelihood of dropping the majority of or perhaps your entire investment finance.

Just how much does it cost?

Due to the exchanging margin made available from nearly all Foreign exchange brokers, its possible to open up a free account and obtain began trading using a comparatively little money.

Currency trading positions come in lots of $100,Thousand. Nevertheless, nearly all Forexs brokes gives you a control ratio all the way to 100:A single, so that you have the capability to control any $100,500 invest as low as $1000 within your accounts. A few agents will provide control associated with 2 hundred:A single and even 500:1, allowing you to commence with as few as $500 or perhaps $250 with your bank account.

Nonetheless, remember to remember that despite the fact that better influence allows you to get the maximum profit potential, additionally, it raises the danger aspect. The larger the influence rate, smaller investing change that is to be forced to eliminate the trading funds. So pick the level of power that you use wisely.
For brand new dealers, it could be safer to start with control of Twenty:One or 55:One particular. This will likely improve the amount youll want to available a forex account, however it will certainly decrease the probability of discovering all your exchanging funds go away as a result of small change in the price of the currency exchange.

SEC Baseball Tournament: Kentucky Wildcats 1 vs. Mississippi St. Bulldogs 2 - Postgame

The Kentucky Wildcats went down to the Mississippi St. Bulldogs 2-1 in Hoover, Alabama this afternoon in the SEC baseball tournament semifinal. The Wildcats were trying to reach the SEC tournament final for the first time since it has been in Hoover, but they fail in a tightly-contested game.

Kentucky played well, but they just could not put together enough hits in succession to get any runs across. Kentucky managed eight hits in the game, but stranded runners on base inning after inning, particularly in the later innings. It was an incredibly frustrating game for Kentucky, including stranding the tying run at third in the ninth with the leadoff batter and Freshman of the Year, Austin Cousino, at the plate, when Cousino popped out to shortstop to end the game. Corey Littrell is charged with the loss, the win probably goes to Nick Routt who worked 3.1 innings for the Bulldogs.

Three times in the last three innings, the Wildcats had the tying run in scoring position, but simply couldn't plate a run. Credit MSU's pitching staff, who really got the job done and now have played five straight days to get into the final. Despite the victory on Thursday, it seems that John Cohen still owns Gary Henderson from a coaching standpoint. A frustrating loss for Kentucky, but they will almost certainly host a regional, although they will equally certainly not receive a national seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Star-divide

The star of the game today for Kentucky had to be J.T. Riddle, who went 3 for 4 with a home run. He hit his final ball hard that could have brought home a run, but it was caught near the warning track for the third out in the 8th.

Overall, Kentucky's pitching staff did a great job as well, this was just one of those tough, one-run games that you hate to see either team lose if you don't have a partisan affiliation. MSU had two harmless errors, although their last one could have been costly as it put a runner on third with 2 outs in the 9th. But overall, this was a cleanly played game, and even the errors were cases of very difficult plays that the players couldn't quite pull off.

Congratulations to the Bulldogs, who will face the Florida Gators or Vanderbilt Commodores tomorrow in the SEC Tournament final. The Wildcats will go home, lick their wounds, and get ready for the big one.

Exclusive: Syria grain trade signals alarm for Assad

LONDON/HAMBURG (Reuters) - Syria is struggling to meet its grain import needs because of sanctions, raising the risk of bread shortages that could sap public support for President Bashar al-Assad as he tries to snuff out a 15-month-old uprising.

Trade sources said a reluctance among foreign banks, shipowners and grain traders to sell to import-dependent Syria - even though food is not itself subject to sanctions - has forced Damascus into an array of unusually small deals, many arranged by shadowy middlemen around the Middle East and Asia.

On Friday, in what might prove to be a turning point on a path toward a politically corrosive food crisis, government data showed the domestic grain harvest falling well short of target and the state grains agency failing to find a single acceptable offer to fulfill a major import tender it issued last month to buy animal feed for its livestock farmers.

"Syrian purchase interest has fallen off in the last 10 days or so," one trade source familiar with exports to Syria of wheat and other grains for human consumption and animal feed told Reuters. "Banks are becoming tougher in checking compliance with sanctions. It is becoming more difficult to get finance from any banks."

State currency reserves have been depleted and the Syrian pound has lost nearly half its value, adding to import problems.

Data for stocks in Syrian granaries is kept secret but there has so far been little widespread disruption evident in subsidized supplies of bread - a staple of a diet in which every Syrian consumes on average half a kilo (a pound) of wheat a day.

But international aid agencies, which are already helping up to a million Syrians stave off hunger, report patchy but spreading food shortages and sharply rising prices. Grain traders cite anecdotal evidence that stocks, concentrated in the restive countryside, are being run down or looted. That may mean the government needs to import more for the big cities it controls.

With international traders saying financial sanctions have bitten hard into purchases, violence hindering back-door imports via Lebanon and the conflict hampering Syria's domestic harvest in the coming months, analysts see mounting risks for Assad.

"Despite the regime's efforts to conceal the full extent of the deterioration, both from its own citizens and from the outside world, it is beyond a doubt that the Syrian economy is in a state of full collapse thanks to the cumulative effect of the various multilateral and bilateral sanctions," said Peter Pham, a director at Washington think-tank the Atlantic Council.

SHORTAGES MAY UNDERMINE LEGITIMACY

Syria relies on imports for about half of its annual needs of 7-8 million tonnes of grain, U.N. data shows. Water shortages, blight and conflict hit last year's harvest.

Traditional secrecy - and the violence that has hit drought-stricken farming areas which were the flashpoint for revolt - makes it hard to calculate how quickly supplies might run short. Not only bakeries are dependent on cereals, but also farmers raising poultry, sheep and meat and dairy cattle.

"A humanitarian disaster would further erode Bashar's claim that the current regime is legitimate," said Anthony Skinner with risk analysts Maplecroft in London. "High inflation and shortages in food supplies will also likely place the families of underpaid rank-and-file soldiers under increasing duress and may provide them with yet another incentive to jump ship."

Dealers in the grain trade hubs of Hamburg and London said difficulties in finding finance and insurance for shipments to sanctions-hit Syria were stifling offers from major exporters.

Of a 150,000-tonne animal feed tender launched last month, one said: "It appears to have been too difficult to undertake a formal tender in this time of sanctions.

Ukrainian exporters cited sanctions for a sharp fall in their sales to Syria in recent weeks, having sold 620,000 tonnes of corn and wheat to Damascus since October.

The European Union, United States and Arab League have led the campaign that bars financial dealings with Syria. Food imports are not a target but, in a bid to sidestep the measures, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of grain, notably from Ukraine and Russia, have been shipped to ports in Lebanon and Turkey this year for trucking overland into Syria.

One major grains supplier in the Middle East complained that some financiers were over-reacting: "You see some banks exaggerate their reactions," he said. "They hear Syria and they just don't want to deal anymore. Other banks are more flexible."

RISE OF THE MIDDLE MEN

Whether by sea or land, critical players in the Syria trade are now contractors with suitable contacts and a willingness to risk their own cash on transactions that flirt with bans on Syrian banks by working between Syrians and foreign exporters.

"The middle men are driving this trade and can make serious money. Syria is making cash payments in euros or dollars through foreign exchange bureaux in places like Lebanon and the middle men will make the transactions from their accounts," one trade source said. "They need to conceal deals."

Private entrepreneurs, many previously unknown to major traders and based in Lebanon, Turkey, India and elsewhere, have been appearing to make purchases on the international market.

One Middle Eastern grain trader said the unusually small vessels arriving at Syrian ports with shipments of grain a fraction the size of a normally commercially viable shipment was an indication that Syria was losing the trust of major operators.

"Syria is in big trouble and can no longer call the shots on terms and conditions," the trader said. "So they will try and take whatever they can even on tiny vessels."

Port and ship tracking data, indicated three ships this week docked at Tartous carrying respectively from Turkey, Ukraine and Egypt: 27,000 tonnes of wheat; 8,000 tonnes of soybean; and a cargo of animal feed of 2,000 tonnes. Typical commercial grains cargoes are around 60,000 tonnes apiece.

Further up the Mediterranean coast at Latakia, Syria's main general cargo port, just a single vessel, carrying less than 10,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat from the Black Sea port of Mikolaiv, or Nikolayev, made a delivery in the past two days.

HARVEST FORECASTS SLASHED

In better times, Syria has been a net exporter of grain. But intensive, state-sponsored production drives since the 1990s have drained the water table in areas like the Hauran plain, where the uprising began last year in the southern city Deraa among a population hit hard by drought and crop blight.

On Friday, an Agriculture Ministry official gave estimated harvest figures for this year that were a quarter lower than targets cited by the state news agency SANA. A production forecast of 3.7 million tonnes of wheat and 843,000 tonnes of barley compared to targets of 4.6 and 1.6 million respectively.

Independent analysts suggest state statistics may be optimistic. Influential French forecaster Strategie Grains said it had slashed its harvest estimate for Syria's 2012 crop for soft and durum wheat by 900,000 tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes. That compared with a harvest of 3.3 million tonnes in 2011.

"The main producer regions are very much at the centre of the civil war and although it is difficult to evaluate the impact this will have on the harvest, a significant disruption seems certain," the firm said in its latest report last week.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, a benchmark for global grains traders, estimated last year's wheat harvest at 3.85 million tonnes and barley at 700,000 tonnes. It estimates total annual grains consumption in Syria at 6.9 million tonnes.

U.N. officials have estimated at least a million Syrians need help with food and other essentials but have failed to agree a supply deal because the Syrian government wants to have control of the distribution of the aid.

"Food security of vulnerable populations in Syria is currently fragile," said World Food Programme spokeswoman Abeer Etefa. "Overall poverty levels are also increasing and access to basic supplies and services is deteriorating."

As Saddam Hussein showed in Iraq in the 1990s, authoritarian governments can survive under sanctions despite severe hardships for ordinary people, though the continued violence in Syria, which has cost over 10,000 lives since March 2011, shows that Assad faces a stiffer internal challenge than did Saddam.

Today, in contrast to Syria, its much bigger, oil-rich, ally Iran has managed to sidestep Western sanctions using alternative financing routes to buy grain on international markets lately.

"While Syria's ally Iran has rather creatively sought to evade its own sanctions noose, Damascus has neither the experience nor the resources available to Tehran with which to play a prolonged cat-and-mouse game," the Atlantic Council's Pham said. "The Assad regime's foreign currency reserves are simply depleting at a rate faster than it can replenish them."

AAXA P3

With its 50-lumen rating, the LCOS-based AAXA P3 ($270 street) isn't the brightest pico projector available. The ?Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street, 3 stars), for one, claims 100 lumens. However, the P3 is bright for the price, and it offers any number of additional features that you might not expect at such a low cost, starting with an HDMI port and the ability to read files from a USB memory key. The combination makes it well worth considering.

One complicating factor is the 1,024 by 600 native resolution. This is better resolution than you'll find in most pico projectors, and generally counts as a plus. Both the PK320 and the Editors' Choice Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector ($400 street, 4 stars), for example, offer WVGA (854 by 480). On the negative side, however, 1024 by 600 is unusual enough that most computers don't support it. If you set your computer to another widescreen resolution, like 854 by 480 or 1280 by 800, you'll introduce scaling artifacts caused by adding or dropping pixels to make the image match the projector's resolution.

Among other issues, the artifacts can make text harder to read. The alternative is to stay with standard SVGA (800 by 600), which will avoid the scaling artifacts and give you better image quality than with lower-resolution projectors, but that limits you to a 4:3 aspect ratio. As a practical matter, you may want to stay with 800 by 600 to get crisper data images and reserve the widescreen capability for video.

Basics, Setup, and Connections
As with any pico projector, one of the P3's key strengths is its portability. Measuring only 1.4 by 2.6 by 4.6 inches (HWD) and weighing 7.5 ounces, it's small and light enough for a shirt pocket. The power block adds 4 more ounces, but you can also run the P3 from its rechargeable battery, so you don't necessarily have to carry the power block on every trip. You'll probably want to bring it most of the time, however, since the claimed battery life is only 65 minutes.

Setup is mostly standard fare for a pico projector, with an assortment of adaptors to let you connect to a composite video source, a USB memory key (to read common image, audio and movie files), or a computer (using a VGA port). In addition AAXA also sells adaptors (at $12.99 to $19.99 direct each) for iPod, Zune, and PSP connections. The one connector worth special mention, because it's unusual for a pico projector, is a full-size HDMI port, for a computer or video source.

Brightness and Image Quality
The P3's 50-lumen rating is admittedly meager compared with most full-size projectors, but it's reasonably bright for a pico projector. As a practical matter, based on the SMPTE recommendations for brightness, 50 lumens is bright enough for a roughly 28- to 37-inch diagonal image at a 16:9 aspect ratio in theater-dark lighting.

One moderate issue is a problem maintaining uniform brightness across the entire screen. On the test unit, I saw vertical strips on both the extreme left and right sides that were noticeably dimmer than the rest of the screen. The issue showed only in screens with light color backgrounds, but is noticeable enough that some people might find it distracting.

Data image quality at 600 by 800 resolution was better than most pico projectors, with the P3 scoring relatively well on our standard suite of DisplayMate tests. Color balance was good, with suitably neutral grays over the entire range from black to white; colors were nicely saturated; and I saw only the slightest pixel jitter with an analog connection on screens that are designed to bring out jitter. Text was easy to read at sizes as small as 9 points.

Video quality was also good for a pico projector, with the P3 doing a reasonably good job in my tests of retaining shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas) and resisting posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually.)

Also very much on the plus side is that the P3 shows far fewer rainbow artifacts?with bright areas breaking up into little red-green-blue rainbows?than most pico projectors. Even if you're sensitive to the effect, as I am, it's not likely that you'll see the artifacts often enough with either data or video images to find them annoying.

Other Issues
As is standard for pico projectors, the P3 uses LEDs for its light source. More important, the LEDs are meant to last the life of the projector, with a rated 15,000 hour lifetime, so you won't have to spend money on replacement lamps. As is also standard, the 1-watt speakers are hardly worth having. If you need sound, however, the audio out port lets you plug in a headset or external powered speaker.

It would be easier to give the P3 an enthusiastic recommendation if it offered a native resolution that was more widely supported. But even if you ignore the widescreen capability and treat it as astandard SVGA projector, there's still a lot to like. Its balance of small size, low weight, reasonable battery life, and good data and video image quality adds up to a strong argument for the P3. Factor in such niceties as the HDMI port plus the ability to read files from a USB key, and the combination makes the P3 a more than reasonable choice at an attractive price.

Apple Will Start Selling Nest Thermostats In Its Retail Stores (AAPL)

Next time you walk into an Apple store, don't be too surprised if you see a few thermostats on sale somewhere between the iPads and the MacBooks.
iLounge reports that Apple's retail stores will soon start selling the Learning Thermostat from Nest, a startup founded by Apple's former senior vice president and iPod designer Tony Fadell.
9to5Mac has since confirmed that the thermostats are currently listed in Apple's inventory database and will go on sale "very soon."
The Nest thermostat, which first went on sale at the end of last year, analyzes your usage habits to help manage your energy consumption at home.
This is somewhat surprising because as far as we can tell, Apple only sells products that are related to other Apple products. It sells plenty of third-party items like Square dongles, headphones and iPad cases, but all of these items support the sale of more Apple gadgets.
The Nest thermostat does have an iPhone app, but that's about it. Buying a Nest doesn't necessarily mean buying an iPhone.

(AP) ? With another season on the brink, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James took their two-man game to new heights.

Just like that, the Miami Heat and a Big Three-Minus-One are headed back to the Eastern Conference finals.

Wade scored 41 points, James added 28 and the Heat finished off the once-frisky Indiana Pacers 105-93 in Game 6 Thursday night, advancing to face either Boston or Philadelphia in the next round.

The way Miami's dynamic duo is playing, it may not matter who's got next.

"They're going to be tough to beat by anybody," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said.

This was a 4-2 triumph that came down to a trilogy, Wade and James responding with the most remarkable week of their high-powered partnership, just when it looked as though the Heat were down and might be out.

Over the course of three dazzling games, James scored 98 points, grabbed 34 rebounds and dished out 24 assists. Wade had 99 points, 22 rebounds and 11 assists. Chris Bosh, sidelined by an abdominal injury, wasn't missed at all.

"In the regular season, we've had some good games," Wade said. "But I don't know if we've ever had three in a row like that in the playoffs, the way we played off each other."

Of course, nothing less than an NBA title will do in South Beach.

Two series down, two to go.

One week earlier, Miami was down 2-1 after getting thumped 94-75 in Indianapolis. The fired-up Pacers had another game on their home court and a chance to build a commanding lead.

Wade and James simply refused to let it happen.

"We understand that when Chris went out, we had to step up," D-Wade said. "The team looked to us to lead."

The banged-up Heat will get a chance to relax a couple of days before worrying about the next opponent, who will be determined in Game 7 at Boston on Saturday. The conference finals start Monday in Miami.

Bosh hopes to return at some point, but it might not matter.

Not the way Wade and James are playing.

"Chris Bosh is an awesome basketball player, but when he goes down, that just means more touches for LeBron and Wade," Vogel said. "That's not exactly an advantage."

The Heat rallied from an early 11-point deficit, riding the hot hand of Wade in the opening half. He scored 26 points by the break, tying Tim Hardaway's 16-year-old franchise record for most playoff points in the first two quarters. James hit consecutive baskets with just over a minute remaining to close it out.

David West led Indiana with 24 points and all five starters were in double figures. Balance, it turned out, was no match for Wade and James.

"Guys are disappointed but understand that it's not our time yet," West said.

In a game of spurts, the decisive one came in the closing minutes of the third quarter.

The Pacers tied it at 66 on Darren Collison's 3-pointer, but it was all Heat the rest of the period. They closed on a 13-3 run, capped by Mario Chalmers' buzzer-beating 3 from the corner. Wade, who was on the bench getting his customary breather at the end of the quarter, leaped from his seat as the ball left Chalmers' hand at the far end, raced along the baseline and pumped his fist when it swished.

When Chalmers raced toward the Miami bench, Wade greeted him near the free throw line with a low-five.

"We just had a bad stretch," West said. "They got us in the third quarter."

Cheerleading aside, D-Wade did his best work while in the game. He dropped 11-of-16 shooting on the Pacers in the first half, but also made sure the MVP stayed involved, dishing off a behind-the-back pass to James for a thunderous jam.

"They're too good," West said. "They pressure you all over the place."

There was none of the nastiness that marked Game 5, when a bunch of flagrant fouls resulted in suspensions for two Miami players, co-captain Udonis Haslem and backup center Dexter Pittman. Pacers president Larry Bird was so disgusted with his team's performance in a 95-86 loss that he accused them of going "soft."

Toughness wasn't the problem this time. This was merely a Miami team on a mission, a mission that began in the summer of 2010 when the Heat signed James and Bosh to join Wade in a seemingly unbeatable trio. There was a glitzy introduction and predictions of multiple championships, which left the rest of the league seething and plenty of people cheering when Miami was knocked off in the NBA finals by the Dallas Mavericks last season.

Shaking off that disappointment, James had perhaps his greatest season yet. But it was Wade who took control in the decisive game against the Pacers. He sliced into the lane, throwing up a one-handed shot that looked like it might go over the backboard, only to catch the top of the glass and drop through, barely touching the twine. He delivered one final blow when he split West and George Hill, banking in the shot despite taking a knee from Hill that sent the Heat guard tumbling to the court.

"We just didn't have enough yet," Vogel said, "but we'll be back."

Chalmers finished with 15 points, while Mike Miller stepped up to provide some quality minutes, scoring 12 points on four 3-pointers to help fill the void without Haslem, Pittman and Bosh.

When Miller wasn't in the game, he stretched out along the baseline to cope with his various aches and pains, more comfortable that way than sitting in a chair. When coach Erik Spoelstra called his number, Miller summoned several of his teammates to help lift him up.

"He might be the toughest guy on the team," Wade said.

The Big Two aren't too shabby, either.

Notes: Indiana started 8 of 9 from the field, but went just 26 of 61 (43 percent) the rest of the way. ... The Heat held the Pacers to an average of less than 40 points in the second half over the last three games. ... Miami had only 10 turnovers, its fewest in the series.

System Rigged Against Small Investor. - Pilant's Business Ethics ...

Facebook IPO: Retail Investors Lose Out While Wall Street Clients Make Profits

In case a reminder was needed, the fallout from the Facebook IPO illustrates that Wall Street appears to be designed to serve the well-connected at the expense of ordinary people.

Ordinary investors may have lost as much as $630 million collectively from the plunge in Facebook?s stock following its public debut, Bloomberg reports. These are the same people who used hundreds or even thousands of dollars of their prized savings to bet on the stock only to have its value drop to way below its opening price of $38 per share.

Facebook IPO: Retail Investors Lose Out While Wall Street Clients Make Profits

Is it moral or ethical to have a rule system which allows the large institutional investors to thrive while penalizing the small investors? Does this encourage responsible investment and make Americans better people?

I think not.

This kind of thing drives people away from investment and it should. That the game is rigged is obvious to the most casual observer. It takes an enormous amount of advertising and badly written text books to get people to buy stock.

Now let?s differentiate here. I heartily approve of investment, that is, buying stock in a company to collect regular dividends and over time have the value of the company go up. That is investment. It carries some risk but it is not the kind of risk carried by those that believe they can buy and sell stock hour by hour, day by day, and make a profit thereby. That is speculation and speculation is inherently risky.

But not all speculators are equal. Let Facebook be a warning to all small investors. Whether you win or lose, investment banks will win.

This is wrong.

It damages faith in the system because the system doesn?t deserve it. If people don?t believe in the basic fairness of society than they will begin to act in ways that are detrimental to that society.

More simply, if playing by the rules doesn?t work, they?ll try something else.

Justice and fairness are for everybody and when they are denied we all suffer.

We should always have in the back of our minds the basic concept of fairness in our dealings. That is how you build a just and fair society.

You punish the wicked and protect the innocent. Is it hard to understand that rule?

Top Chef Canada Season 2 Episode 11 Recap | Foodbeat.com

Last Episode

Last week on Top Chef Canada Season 2, Trista Sheen, the last female contestant, was sent home. The remaining contestants are Jonathan Korecki, David Chrystian, Trevor Bird, Carl Heinrich, and Xavier Lacaze.

Quickfire Challenge

The first challenge of this episode was all about cooking with Kraft Dinner. KD is a deliciously bad, but classic childhood food. The guest judge was Keshia Chante, a relatively famous pop singer. There were two parts to this challenge: the first to create a classic, home style take on the macaroni and cheese dish, and second to make a refined, elegant version. It was a high stakes quickfire challenge, but no one would be heading home. Instead, the winner would receive a $10,000 prize, courtesy of Kraft Dinner.

Quickfire Results

The chefs on the bottom were Trevor Bird and Jonathan Korecki. Those on the top were Xavier Lacaze and David Chrystian.

It was David Chrystian who won for his mac and grilled cheese sandwich.

Elimination Challenge

The elimination round had the chefs cooking Italian food. They would cook a 6 course traditional Italian feast, with each course decided by random draw. David Chrystian drew pesce- a fish dish. Xavier Lacaze drew primi- a pasta dish. Carl Heinrich drew secondi- a meat dish. Jonathan drew zuppa- a soup dish. Finally, finally Trevor Bird drew dolce- the dessert course.

Last episode had Trevor Bird under fire for his poor attempt at a dessert, and so he was especially nervous this round. He chose to create a tiramisu, a very classic and hard to master Italian dessert. Xavier was very proud of his braised veal breast pasta dish. He said he wanted to make love to his veal, but the judges did not agree with the sentiment. David had the guts to serve his fish whole, done in the kitchen?s wood oven.

The guest judge was Lidia Bastianich, an exceptionally famous Italian chef.

Elimination Results

Jonathan Korecki and David Chrystian were on the top. Jonathan Korecki was the overall winner for his deconstructed egg soup. It was a risk to create a non-traditional dish for the challenge. He won a trip for two to New York as a prize. David Chrystian has his dish chosen to be one of the three served at Milestone restaurants. He also received a $3000 cash prize.

Carl Heinrich, Xavier Lacaze, and Trevor Bird were on the bottom. Xavier was sent home.

School programs lead fight against childhood obesity | Healthy Diet ...

Inside E.A. Jones Elementary School, the battle against childhood obesity is being fought with fresh ingredients.

Bulletin boards tout the merits of home gardens and expose the tongue-twisting preservatives in junk food. Students take a ?food adventurer? pledge, promising to sample new recipes and never to utter the words ?yuck? or ?gross.? Stainless steel bowls burst with a bounty of greens, vegetables and herbs freshly harvested from the school garden.

And fifth-grade chefs sport aprons and spout exuberant reviews of their seed-to-plate cooking class.

?I love it!? said Andy Jaime, 11, his eyes lighting up behind his glasses. ?We learn about different types of food and how to eat healthy.?

It?s a typical day in the Fort Bend ISD school?s culinary classroom, where professional chefs from Recipe for Success guide students through healthy cooking lessons, organic gardening and nutrition education.

The classes are one component of Activate for Kids, a health and fitness pilot program developed by UnitedHealthcare and the United Health Foundation. The program, which kicked off this year in six school districts in Texas, Florida and Georgia, is among a growing number using a more holistic approach to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic.

In addition to the cooking classes, Activate for Kids runs early morning Zumba aerobics classes for elementary students, an obesity intervention program for kids and their parents, and health and fitness fairs in the Fort Bend and Klein school districts.

In Sharpstown High School, one of 53 schools across the country participating in the HealthCorps program started by Dr. Mehmet Oz, students can take before-school meditation classes or participate in an after-school fitness club.

HFLSolutions.com

Recipe for Success, a Houston-based nonprofit that offers cooking, gardening and nutrition education classes in 13 Houston-area schools, is expanding its curriculum nationwide by offering online training and certification.

?More and more schools are realizing that this is something they need to do,? said Gracie Cavnar, the founder of Recipe for Success. ?All the data says weight patterns and food attitudes are set for life by age 11. Early intervention is mandatory.?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled over the last 30 years. Those children are at greater risk of diabetes, hypertension and other illnesses, are more likely to drop out of school, and demonstrate shorter attention spans.

Many of the programs incorporate nutrition education, cooking classes, fitness lessons, goal-setting techniques and emotional wellness tips.

Patterned after the Peace Corps, Healthcorps recruits new college graduates for two-year stints as school coordinators. At Sharpstown High Scool, Jornae Nevels leads cooking classes, fitness sessions and meditation training.

?It?s about exposing them to something new,? said Nevels, who also educates students about better food choices.

Activate for Kids offers anti-obesity training for school nurses and serves as a conduit between schools and community resources, said Stephanie Kellam, the wellness coordinator assigned to Fort Bend ISD. For example, the Recipe for Success classes at Jones Elementary are funded by a United Health Foundation grant.

If a recent fifth-grade cooking class is any indication, the program is already having an impact on the students.

That day, Recipe for Success chef Rakhi Desai ? Miss Rakhi to the kids ? led the class through the steps for making healthful pizza. The students chopped up fragrant bunches of oregano and parsley, rolled out whole-wheat dough and sprinkled rainbow-hued veggie toppings across the rectangular canvas.

But the real test came after the veggie and pesto pizzas came out of the oven, and everyone got a taste and a chance to review their creation.

?It?s delicious!? declared Andy. ?I would keep it exactly the way it is.?
