D'oh, Canada: Bombers offense is MIA in loss to Toronto

BLUE JAYS 3, YANKEES 2

TORONTO ? The Yankees botched multiple scoring opportunities in a 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon and also missed a chance to put themselves in position to clinch at least a playoff spot.

A victory and an Angels loss later Saturday would've guaranteed the Yanks entry into the postseason. Instead, the Yanks really only have themselves to blame for losing to the hapless Jays and losing a half-game of their division lead, pending the result of Baltimore's night game against Boston.

With the Orioles hosting the Red Sox at Camden Yards, the Yanks held only a half-game lead in the American League East race. Their magic number to clinch the division title is five, depending on what happens to the O's.

But if the Yanks continue to play the way they did Saturday, their foray into serious October baseball likely will be brief. Andy Pettitte (5-4) was OK, allowing three runs and five hits in 5-2/3 innings, but he didn't hold a 2-0 lead and the offense couldn't add anything.

Joba Chamberlain, who came in for Pettitte with two out in the sixth, gave up a tie-breaking RBI double to Adeiny Hechevarria.

The Yankees had ample opportunities to score, putting the leadoff man on in each of the first five innings. They loaded the bases with no out in the first inning and scored on sac flies by Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson for a 2-0 lead, but they had trouble doing much damage afterward.

In the third, they loaded the bases with no out again, but Granderson popped up, Andruw Jones struck out and Adeiny Hechavarria made a terrific grab on Eduardo Nunez's hard liner toward second.

They had the leadoff man on again in the seventh when Ichiro Suzuki singled, but he was caught stealing. In the eighth, Raul Ibanez reached on an error with one out and pinch-runner Brett Gardner was thrown out stealing, though replays indicated Gardner was safe.

Pettitte, meanwhile, showed that he's ready to at least offer some distance in the postseason, even if he wasn't that sharp. He threw 94 pitches, 56 for strikes.

He gave up a homer to Rajai Davis in the first inning, the first run against him since he returned from the disabled list.

The Jays tied the score at 2 in the fifth inning when Jeff Mathis led off with a double off Pettitte and scored on Davis' two-out infield single. Davis topped the ball down the third base line and Alex Rodriguez fielded it even though it likely would've gone foul and Davis beat the throw to first as Mathis came home.

In the sixth, Pettitte walked Yunel Escobar leading off and then Yan Gomes got a single when Cano didn't cover first base in time after Nick Swisher fielded Gomes' bunt. Pettitte retired the next two hitters, getting Mathis on a brilliant running catch in center by Granderson, and then came out of the game.

Hechevarria hit a long drive to right field off Joba Chamberlain for a double. Escobar scored easily for a 3-2 Toronto lead, but Gomes took a big turn around third and was thrown out trying to go back to the bag. The Jays had trouble on the basepaths all day.

Mitt Romney Is All In For Monsanto | Neon Tommy

Mitt Romney has close ties with Monsanto. (Creative Commons)

Agriculture is one of the most important industries in the U.S., since we are the bread basket of the world. However, it is an industry that is largely taken for granted.?

The turn of the last century ushered in an era of U.S. dominance in manufacturing. The resultant new economy forced agriculture to industrialize as well, and this is what gave us Monsanto.

The infamous Monsanto Company started out as an industrial chemical company in 1901. Up until the 1940s, Monsanto made chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in addition to plastics and synthetic fabrics.

In the 1960s, Monsanto established its agricultural division, which the company has since adopted as its main business model.

The company has always prided itself on "having friends in high places" - especially when it comes to business executives-turned-politicians. From 1977 to 1985, Mitt Romney was involved with the company via Bain & Company. Romney represented Monsanto so well during the first slew of Monsanto controversies that in fact, the origins of the firm Bain Capital can be traced to Monsanto.

The Vietnam War was the catalyst for Monsanto's poor reputation. The company supplied a herbicide known as Agent Orange to the U.S. military for use in the war. This chemical has since been linked to cancer outbreaks among Vietnamese and American soldiers, and the use of Agent Orange has been crowned "the largest chemical warfare operation in history."

In addition, Monsanto, which is based out of St. Louis, has been linked to chemical dumping incidents as recently as 2002. There have been documented cases of chemical disposal in rivers in Missouri and Alabama. Ten years ago, a Mother Jones article described fish "spurting blood and shedding skin within 10 seconds of a PCB dump."?

In the aftermath of these tragedies, Romney was charged with guiding the company out of lawsuits with Congress. Romney proved to be a critical asset to Monsanto, and Bain & Company was forced to create Bain Capital for Mitt Romney in order to keep him with the firm. At Bain Capital, Romney held the title of both president and CEO.

For decades now, the corporate agricultural monopoly has been concealing its fraudulent practices with the help of other key lawmakers. Monsanto affiliates include congressional men and women on both sides of the political spectrum, including Lidia Watrud, Roger Beachy and Hilary Clinton.

Not only has Romney done his part to protect Monsanto in the past, but he has also hinted at his plans to help the company in the future. His Agricultural Advisory Committee is comprised mostly of Monsanto lobbyists and partners.

Even worse, Romney is in favor putting the "Monsanto rider" provision in the 2012 Farm Bill. The Farm Bill, which has been put on ice in the House until after the election, has been a hotly debated partisan bill which for many months now. The "Monsanto rider" provision of the bill would prevent the USDA from blocking "unsafe or untested products, forbid outside studies of Monsanto products? safety, and exempt itself from environmental law."

This past summer, the worst drought in recent memory hit the great plains area, which among other things has caused a spike in food prices. WIth no end to the drought in sight, climate change on the horizon and continued pollution threats to our fresh water, do we really want a president who supports the interests of a company that doesn't give a damn about the environment?

Mitt Romney can't be trusted to protect our natural resources and lead this country toward a sustainable future. He will be a puppet for Monsanto, like other lawmakers before him.

(AP) ? Citing national security risks, President Barack Obama on Friday blocked a Chinese company from owning four wind farm projects in northern Oregon near a Navy base where the U.S. military flies unmanned drones and electronic-warfare planes on training missions.

It was the first time in 22 years that a U.S. president has blocked such a foreign business deal.

Obama's decision was likely to be another irritant in the increasingly tense economic relationship between the U.S. and China. It also comes against an election-year backdrop of intense criticism from Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney, who accuses Obama of not being tough enough with China.

In his decision, Obama ordered Ralls Corp., a company owned by Chinese nationals, to divest its interest in the wind farms it purchased earlier this year near the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility in Boardman, Ore.

The case reached the president's desk after the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, known as CFIUS, determined there was no way to address the national security risks posed by the Chinese company's purchases. Only the president has final authority to prohibit a transaction.

The administration would not say what risks the wind farm purchases presented. The Treasury Department said CFIUS made its recommendation to Obama after receiving an analysis of the potential threats from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Morrow County planner, Carla McLane, said the projects had won county approval and construction was under way until CFIUS issued an order in July that halted construction. She said she does not know what the security concerns were.

Each of the four projects consists of five turbines, each with a two-megawatt capacity, for a total of 10 megawatts per project, or a total of 40 for the four. As the crow flies, McLane said, the projects are about 10 miles from the bombing range ? as it's known locally.

The military has acknowledged that it used the Oregon Naval facility to test unmanned drones and the EA-18G "Growler." The electronic warfare aircraft accompanies U.S. fighter bombers on missions and protectively jams enemy radar, destroying them with missiles along the way.

At the Oregon site, the planes fly as low as 200 feet and nearly 300 miles per hour.

The last time a president used the law to block a transaction was 1990, when President George H.W. Bush voided the sale of Mamco Manufacturing to a Chinese agency.

In 2006, President George W. Bush approved a CFIUS case involving the merger of Alcatel and Lucent Technologies.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that Obama's decision is specific to this transaction and does not set a precedent for other foreign direct investment in the U.S. by China or any other country.

China's trade advantage over the U.S. has emerged as a key issue in the final weeks of the presidential campaign. Romney accuses Obama of failing to stand up to Beijing, while the president criticizes the GOP nominee for investing part of his personal fortune in China and outsourcing jobs there while he ran the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Both campaigns are running ads on China in battleground states, especially Ohio, where workers in the manufacturing industry have been hard-hit by outsourcing.

Obama, in an interview Wednesday with The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, said the U.S. must push hard against Beijing but "not go out of our way to embarrass" China.

"We're not interested in triggering an all-out trade war that would damage both economies," Obama said.

The president has the power to void foreign transactions under the Defense Production Act. It authorizes the president to suspend or prohibit certain acquisitions of U.S. businesses if there is credible evidence that the foreign purchaser might take action that threatens to impair national security.

CFIUS is chaired by the treasury secretary. The secretaries of state, defense, commerce, energy and homeland security are also on the committee. The director of national intelligence is a non-voting member.

Earlier this month, Ralls sued the national security panel, alleging CFIUS exceeded its authority when it ordered the company to cease operations and withdraw from the wind-farm developments it bought. Ralls asked for a restraining order and a preliminary injunction to allow construction at the wind farms to continue. The firm said it would lose the chance for a $25 million investment tax if the farms were not operable by Dec. 31.

In a statement Friday, Tim Kia, a lawyer for Ralls, said the project posed no national security threat and said "the President's order is without justification, as scores of other wind turbines already operate in the area."

Ralls dropped its request for a preliminary injunction this week after CFIUS allowed the firm to resume some pre-construction work. With the lawsuit, continuing, the firm's lawyers were expected to react quickly to the administration decision, said a person familiar with the lawsuit who insisted on anonymity because of the sensitive legal repercussions.

Ralls' legal team includes Paul Clement and Viet Dinh, two top law veterans of President George W. Bush's administration. Both men were key players in Bush's aggressive national security operation.

Clement, who was solicitor-general and argued administration positions before the Supreme Court, has since opposed the Obama administration's health care plan and defended the Defense of Marriage Act before the top court.

Dinh, a former assistant attorney general who was the main architect of the Bush administration's anti-terror USA Patriot Act, has lately served as a director and legal adviser to Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

A second Chinese firm stymied by CFIUS urged U.S. authorizes this week to investigate their firm to quell fears of ties to China's military. Huawei Technologies Ltd. announced in early September that it would unwind its purchase of U.S.-based computer firm 3Leaf Systems after the deal was rejected by CFIUS.

Huawei, one of the world's largest producers of computer network switching gear, has repeatedly struggled to convince U.S. authorities that they can be trusted to oversee sensitive technology sometimes used in national security work. In 2008, CFIUS concerns led Huawei and private equity firm Bain Capital to abandon an $2.2 billion deal to buy a firm that produces anti-hacking software for the U.S. military

Farm bill in limbo: Who might lose subsidies? : BusinessJournalism ...

agricultureWell, it looks as though no farm bill will be passed by Congress before the Nov. 6 general election, a cause of consternation throughout much of the agriculture industry.

According to this worthwhile?MinnPost.com article, there won?t be too many immediate effects, because of stop-gap funding and also that many provisions of a new bill, had it passed, wouldn?t take effect until next year anyway.? So there still is time for Congress to act to renew the five-year legislation which last was updated in 2007.

While we wait, and since the fate of crop?subsidies are one of the forefront issues in the crafting of a new farm law, you might want to take a look at whom in your region benefits from existing subsidies.

The Environmental Working Group offers a Farm Subsidy Database that?s searchable by ZIP code, and your readers might find the result of a search quite enlightening.? I live in a suburb of Detroit that adjoins some pastoral areas but is hardly an agricultural mecca, yet a search of just my ZIP code turned up dozens of recipients of the farm subsidy, mostly for corn, wheat and soybean crops.? Some of the names I recognized as local businesspeople who practice trades and professions unrelated to farming. Apparently 40-plus local residents, however, hold enough acreage to get government payments ranging from a few hundred dollars to five-figure amounts.

The database includes figures back to 1995 and drills down to specific programs and crops for each landowner (individual or business) listed.? One local market garden, for example ? the kind that sells tomatoes, pick-your-own?pumpkin and corn-on-the-cob at roadside stands ? apparently dabbles in wheat and soybeans, too, and has reaped?disaster assistance and other payments in the six figures.

This information just screams out for an interactive map or other graphic showing the?location of farm subsidy recipients and what programs they were helped by.? Clearly these operators will have an opinion on the proposed revisions to the farm bill ? including the replacement of subsidies with insurance ? and you can use their stories to help illustrate the possible ramifications, pro and con, of?an overhaul to the programs.

Another area to look at is state property tax breaks for farmland; I nosed around in my state not long ago and found examples of hobby farms ? spreads that were mainly residential but that might have a pet goat or horse or some such and might sell a few hundred dollars worth of produce each year?? getting hefty tax breaks.? Check out this editorial from NJ.com on the same topic, it calls for a ban on tax breaks for ?fake farms.?

By way of background, here is the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s farm bill portal; the USDA?s Economic Research Service also offers a compilation of resources.??This site, FarmBillPrimer, appears to be run by a private citizen and self-described farm bill advocate; keeping in mind her agenda is not objective, it?s still a handy aggregate of a variety of related resources, like an appropriations chart and programs sorted by category and priority.? A number of other advocacy groups, industry groups and other stakeholders also offer their versions of online primers and update sites related to the bill.? And the New York Times also has a handy farm bill channel where related stories are compiled.

Social Media Harvesting Communications Connections for the ...

The marriage of agriculture and social media likely conjures up images of crop seeding on Farmville, but socially savvy agribusinesses are proving that the connection runs much deeper than the popular Zynga game.

A 2011 study by the American Farm Bureau Federation revealed that of the 98% of farmers and ranchers ages 18-25 who have internet access, 76% of them use social media. The agribusiness industry often gets a bad rep for being ?behind the times,? an assumption that couldn?t be further from the truth. In reality, agribusinesses have taken social media by storm as a channel that is revolutionizing both B2B and B2C communications for the industry.

    Education a Key Driver

The agribusiness social media movement is in part due to the efforts of groups like the AgChat Foundation whose mission is to ?empower farmers and ranchers to connect communities through social media platforms.?

The Foundation serves as an educational resource designed to equip farmers and ranchers with the necessary skill set to engage with both businesses and consumers via social channels. The Foundation?s website is full of useful tips and information that can benefit anyone from Twitter newcomers to blogging veterans looking for a new ways to use social media to interact with fellow farmers and consumers alike.

The takeaway is that sometimes it isn?t a resistance to technology that keeps a group or industry out of social media, but rather a lack of knowledge of how to productively use digital outreach for tangible business benefits. Marketers working in notoriously non-social media-friendly industries can learn from the way AgChat has made social channels not only accessible, but as a means for focused outreach.

    Compelling Chats

One way the AgChat Foundation is working to get people talking is through weekly #AgChats on Twitter, held Tuesdays from 8 to 10 p.m. Eastern time. These chats have seen more than 2,000 participants from seven countries and four continents.

#AgChat is moderated by a different agricultural professional each week, with recent chats being led by industry leaders like prime rib and hamburger farmer Darin Grimm (@kansfarmer) and #AgChat founder and agriculture advocate Michele Payn-Knoper (@mpaynknoper). #AgChat serves as a helpful forum to share stories, discuss the future, and learn more about the status of current issues.

From an agribusiness marketing perspective, joining these Twitter chats provides participants great insight into the industry, and also gives farmers a chance to prove their thought leadership in a public forum. For farmers trying to build their businesses, looking into moderating, or even just participating in these chats can be a great way to network within the field and gain respect and recognition from peers, a lesson that certainly transcends the agricultural industry.

    Kickstarting Digital Development

Beyond the blogosphere and Twitterverse, farmers have tapped into other marketing channels to raise awareness for their causes. Maryland?s largest organic farm, One Straw Farm, has taken to Kickstarter as a way to harness digital influence and online fundraising for the development of two mobile apps.

The first app would provide a way for farmers to communicate with consumers on a weekly basis throughout the harvest season, while the second app would assist farmers with keeping records. No enterprise is immune from the need for record-keeping, and for an industry where the bulk of time is spent in the field (literally), this app would alleviate issues with recording procedures by enabling farmers to update their records from anywhere.

While, unfortunately, One Straw Farm?s campaign has fallen short of its fundraising goals, a simple search for ?farm? on Kickstarter shows that numerous other agribusinesses are having success using the platform to raise funds for farm-related business endeavors. Even when a campaign fails to reach its fundraising goal, Kickstarter is still a valuable platform for increasing visibility of a business as a whole.

    Personal Connections

The media onslaught condemning the use of ?pink slime? has made clear the growing focus on the farm-to-table movement, giving those in agribusiness yet another reason to turn to social media.

Ecotrust?s desire to connect professional buyers and sellers is what sparked the creation of its popular social networking platform FoodHub. FoodHub?s purpose is to provide an online community that connects farmers and ranchers with buyers and distributors. With this connection, buyers (who can range from chefs to school dining service directors) can easily obtain background information and stories about specific farmers and ranchers, and their operations.

While the network is currently only available in the westernU.S., FoodHub presents a great opportunity for all types of buyers to capitalize on the farm-to-table movement by hand-picking the farmers and ranchers they want to work with.

In addition to using platforms like FoodHub, farmers are also using social media on a personal basis to tell their farm?s story, give updates during the harvest season, promote upcoming farmers? markets, answer consumer questions and more.

Self-described ?Farm Girl? Erin Ehnle has spent all of her 20 years living on a farm, and now uses multiple social media platforms to share her experiences. Part-photographer, part-writer, and full-fledged farmer, Erin shares stories about her family?s central Illinois farm with more than 13,000 Facebook fans and a loyal blog following. Through photos, tweets, infographics, Pinterest, heartfelt blog entries and sharing informative articles,Erin proves the value of social outreach for farmers and small business owners alike.

Far beyond Farmville, agribusinesses are taking their experiences from farm to Facebook, showing that social media plays an important role in the industry?s B2B and B2C communications. By prioritizing the education of farmers and ranchers on the merits of embracing digital communications, the agriculture community has quickly taken advantage of social media to conduct outreach on a budget.

Know What You Are Doing When Buying A Home | Eric Chua : Life ...

Just like with anything else, you must learn what you?re doing before you get started. When it comes to real estate, it is a great asset to help you be able to make some great decisions in life, for you as well as your family for ages to come. Read this article for useful tips about buying a piece of real estate.

If you are planning to move to another area, go on the Internet to research the neighborhood in which the property is located. Some areas may have more information that others available, but at the very least, you can find certain information. You can find out about the population, local schools and salary ranges compared to other locations.

You may find that the sellers may work with you in order to ensure that you are able to buy the house, even if either of you needs to make some sacrifices. Perhaps the seller will offer to cover the closing costs or pay for the some of the property?s needed repairs .

TIP! You may be able to borrow an assessor?s device for measuring a house. You should do this before deciding to buy.

    Rental Property

Look at properties and do your homework before you buy them. There are several important factors to consider when purchasing rental property. Sustainability is important. Has the property been well-maintained, so that you won?t need to make expensive repairs? Equally as important is the location of the property. Location can determine the value of the rental property. You want to have a rental property located near centers of activity, such as popular retailers, restaurants and other service providers for your future tenants. The area?s average income is the third key feature. Rental income can vary greatly depending on the location, condition of property, and demand for rental properties. Persons in high rent areas are not going to be as concerned with location as persons in areas where rent is lower.

Ask the seller if they would contribute towards closing costs as part of your offer. An option is to ask the person you are buying the home from to lessen your financial responsibility by means of a buy down for a few years. A seller is less likely to negotiate over the sale price if financial incentives are attached to an offer.

TIP! When you are purchasing a home, make sure to explore all your financing options. You might be surprised at the number of programs out there that offer help with down payments.

See if your real estate agent has a home-buying checklist. Several Realtors have checklists that cover the purchase of a home, including budget. This checkoff sheet will help you ascertain that nothing is overlooked.

Look for a new home that has enough room if you plan on starting a family or already have children. Not only is space important, but so is safety. Things like bad wiring, steps, a pool, and other potential hazards need to be looked at. You will be sure that your house is safe if there were children brought up in it.

Although a bank sometimes may not require an inspection of a home, you should still have one done. When you use a professional inspector before buying a house, you will find out if there are any problems. Any number of things can go wrong in a home, and only a professional will be able to point out many of them. It is a worthy investment to save yourself a headache in the future.

TIP! Prior to purchasing a new property, you should always do an adequate amount of research. A lot of people will jump into a purchase before they fully understand the market.

Whatever down payment your mortgage company stipulates, make sure you have it. The unappealing alternative is paying private mortgage insurance, or PMI. This can add a lot of money to your monthly expenses, because you need to prove to your bank that you will be able to afford paying your mortgage.

Try not to be too aggressive when you negotiate the purchase of a property. Many times people are too aggressive because they are trying to get the best price, and they end up losing out entirely. Simply state your preferences and then let the lawyer and the Realtor handle the negotiations as their job descriptions require!

Maintain contact with real estate investors. Properties are always available, but not every one makes a great match for each investor. By doing this, you will stand a greater chance of discovering the rare find that has eluded other purchasers.

TIP! Real estate agents should keep in contact with former clients over the holidays and on the anniversaries of their home-buying. When they hear from you again, they will know that they helped during your buying selling experience.

The asking price for a home is the beginning point. You need to give a lot of thought to the price you want to actually offer. If you work together with the seller, you are sure to reach a selling price that you both feel comfortable with.

    Rental Property

Research a rental property thoroughly before buying it. If you are thinking about buying a rental property, don?t sign on the dotted line if you haven?t thoroughly reviewed at least two years worth of records. The reason behind this is so that you are sure that the individual who is selling you the property has provided you with the right information about what sort of income you can expect to receive from the property. Your lender will most likely also want to see verification of income before they will issue a purchase loan for the property.

TIP! Take somebody along with you that knows what they are doing to check out the house for things that you might not see or think to check. Do this even if you are buying the home as a single individual.

The time you?ve spend reading these real estate buying tips is time well spent. A real estate agent can help you to a certain extent, but there are many decisions that you have to make yourself. Your decisions can now be made with understanding and

Alanis Morissette Makes the Political Personal on New Album ...

    September 26, 2012 3:50 PM ET

Releasing a new album is more than a good reason for Alanis Morissette to go on tour: she also enjoys the conversations new work can spark, particularly the ones she's having about Havoc and Bright Lights, her latest.?"I thought they would wind up being exciting, but it's taken the philosopher in me to a whole different level," she told?Rolling Stone?during a 45-minute call with reporters yesterday. "So answering questions about this record, I feel like I'm in my ideal, dream-come-true seat, because I get to have a little bit of social commentary, and I'm doing it in real-time."

What Morissette has learned from talking to listeners is that they are still primarily interested in how her songs relate to their own lives. "No matter how political or psychological the Q&As get, the questions always come back to relationships and most importantly, romantic ones," she said. "So it's the revaluation and re-definition, frankly, of marriage and commitment and why commitment yields healing and how art is cathartic in and of itself but it doesn't create healing. That healing comes from commitment, deep intimacy and the long term diving into relationships, especially when it's hard."

Those are themes the singer explored when writing?Havoc and Bright Lights. "I think it speaks to how much braver I am to delve into a deeper intimacy in my relationships, the one with my son, with my husband, even to the point where I'd be ready to get married," she said of the new record. "Intimacy was always terrifying for me, so intimacy with spirit, other people, friends, even professional colleagues. So it's a relationship record even more so than ever before."

Morissette also address several big-picture topics, delving into feminism on "Woman Down," for example. It's a meaningful topic for the singer.

"There really is, for me anyway, no better time to be alive as a woman than 2012," she said. "We went through the women's movement, which was an important movement, we became empowered, but in an individualistic, autonomous kind of way. Neither style, neither approach afforded any kind of connection or intimacy. And now we're slowly segueing into this gorgeous era where we're empowered but we also have the knowledge that interdependence can afford this connection within and connection with other people."

"Woman Down" is already among Morissette's favorite new songs to perform?? in fact, the tune is the first song on the set list for a North American tour that kicked off Monday in San Diego.?"We change the set list a lot because we have the luxury of being able to do that," she said, noting that she focuses on the new album and includes "a bit of an acoustic set" toward the end of the show. "My bandmates and I want to keep ourselves on our toes," Morissette said, resulting in what she called a "super intimate" concert in San Diego.?

Building a set from 17 years' worth of material is partly an exercise in consensus among the musicians, the singer said. "I'll sit around with my bandmates and I look to them a lot and say 'What songs are you loving and missing harmonically?'" Morissette also takes care to cover the full range of emotions that occur in her music. "I want to make sure that I touch on enough aspects of my own humanity that it's a varied show. I'm going to keep it positive, challenging, exaltative, harrowing and have it all come forth ? angry, happy, blissed out, infatuated, pissed off."

Report: The Internet Is a Language Killer

A new study conducted by a European nonprofit called META-NET suggests that a number of European languages could eventually vanish from the Internet. Languages such as Icelandic, Latvian and Lithuanian don't have enough speakers to gain traction as popular languages on the Web. The report goes so far as to say that German, Italian, Spanish and French could be at risk, too.

Israel's Netanyahu draws his "red line" for Iran

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? In his most detailed plea to date for global action against Iran's nuclear program, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday the world has until next summer at the latest to stop Iran before it can build a nuclear bomb.

Netanyahu flashed a diagram of a cartoon-like bomb before the U.N. General Assembly showing the progress Iran has made, saying it has already completed the first stage of uranium enrichment.

Then he pulled out a red marker and drew a line across what he said was a threshold Iran was approaching and which Israel could not tolerate ? the completion of the second stage and 90 percent of the way to the uranium enrichment needed to make an atomic bomb.

"By next spring, at most by next summer at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage," he said. "From there, it's only a few months, possibly a few weeks before they get enough enriched uranium for the first bomb."

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel's destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

On Thursday he presented his case to the world just why a nuclear armed Iran would be a danger to many other countries as well. Casting the battle as one between modernity and the "medieval forces of radical Islam," Netanyahu said deterrence would not work against Iran as it had with the Soviet Union.

"Deterrence worked with the Soviets, because every time the Soviets faced a choice between their ideology and their survival, they chose survival," he said. But "militant jihadists behave very differently from secular Marxists. There were no Soviet suicide bombers. Yet Iran produces hordes of them."

Netanyahu has repeatedly argued that time is running out to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power and that the threat of force must be seriously considered. Israeli leaders have issued a series of warnings in recent weeks suggesting that if Iran's uranium enrichment program continues it may soon stage a unilateral military strike. This week Iranian leaders suggested they may strike Israeli preemptively if they felt threatened, stoking fears of a regional war.

President Barack Obama has vowed to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power but has rejected Netanyahu's demands for setting an ultimatum past which the U.S. would attack. His administration has urgently sought to hold off Israeli military action, which would likely result in the U.S. being pulled into a conflict and cause region-wide mayhem on the eve of American elections. Netanyahu's 2013 Israeli deadline could be interpreted as a type of concession, but Israeli officials insisted action was still needed immediately and that in his speech Netanyahu was referring to the absolute point of no return.

Netanyahu appeared to be trying to soothe his differences with the White House when he thanked Obama's stance, adding that his own words were meant only to help achieve the common goal.

And he thanked the U.S. and other governments that have imposed sanctions which, he said, have hurt Iran's economy and curbed its oil exports but have not changed Tehran's intentions to develop the capacity to build nuclear weapons.

"I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down. This will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to convince Iran to dismantle its nuclear weapons program altogether," the Israeli prime minister said. "Red lines don't lead to war, red lines prevent war."

Netanyahu did not detail what should be done if his "red line" was crossed, but the insinuation was clear. In perhaps his final plea before Israel felt the need to take matters into its own hands, Netanyahu pounded away at the dangers posed by Iran.

"To understand what the world would be like with a nuclear-armed Iran, just imagine the world with a nuclear-armed al-Qaida," he said. "Nothing could imperil the world more than a nuclear-armed Iran."

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but Israel, the U.S. and other Western allies suspect otherwise. Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have already been placed on Iran.

A U.N. report last month only reinforced Israeli fears, finding that Iran has moved more of its uranium enrichment activities into fortified bunkers deep underground where they are impervious to air attack. Enrichment is a key activity in building a bomb, though it has other uses as well, such as producing medical isotopes.

While Israel is convinced that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, American officials believe Iran has not yet made a final decision to take the plunge and that there is still time for diplomacy.

Iran's talks with world powers over the issue have stalled, however, and Netanyahu argued Thursday that "Iran uses diplomatic negotiations as a means to buy time to advance its nuclear program."

Israel's timeline for military action is shorter than that of the United States, which has far more powerful bunker-busting bombs at its disposal, and there is great suspicion in Israel over whether in the moment of truth Obama will follow through on his pledge.

"Each day, that point is getting closer. That's why I speak today with such a sense of urgency. And that's why everyone should have a sense of urgency," Netanyahu said. "The relevant question is not when Iran will get the bomb. The relevant question is at what stage can we no longer stop Iran from getting the bomb."

Netanyahu has a history of fiery speeches about Iran before the U.N. General Assembly.

In 2009, he waved the blueprints for the Nazi death camp Auschwitz and invoked the memory of his own family members murdered by the Nazis while making his case against Iran's Holocaust denial and threats to destroy Israel. And last year, he warned about "the specter of nuclear terrorism" if Iran were not stopped.

While the bulk of Netanyahu's speech dealt with Iran, he also rebuked Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who spoke shortly before him to the U.N. General Assembly and accused Israel of ethnic cleansing for building settlements in east Jerusalem.

"We won't solve our conflict with libelous speeches at the U.N.," Netanyahu said. "We have to sit together, negotiate together and reach a mutual compromise."

Israel captured the eastern part of Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Mideast War and later annexed it in a move that hasn't been recognized internationally. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state along with the Gaza Strip and the rest of the West Bank.

In his speech, Abbas also said he had opened talks on a new bid for international recognition at the U.N.

The Palestinians will apply to the General Assembly for nonmember state status, in stark contrast to last year's failed bid to have the Security Council admit them as a full member state.

If Palestine does become a U.N. observer state, it will not have voting rights in the world body but will have international recognition as a "state." This could enhance the possibility of the Palestinians joining U.N. agencies and becoming parties to treaties including the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court.

Abbas insisted that the new quest for recognition was "not seeking to delegitimize Israel, but rather establish a state that should be established: Palestine."

Will Home Improvements Take a Long Time?

Home improvements will vary in time length depending on what you want to get done. Having a bedroom or bathroom added to your house is going to take a lot longer than having the exterior painted. Adding a swimming pool to your backyard may take weeks, as well as additions to home insurance coverage while replacing your windows can only take a couple of days. It all depends on your house and the home improvement project in question.

When you are comparing companies that offer home improvement projects make sure you ask about how long the whole process will take, from concept to clean up. This will give you a better idea of how long you will be living in a mess and how to change your life to adapt to this situation. In some instances your kitchen may be out of working order for days, if not weeks, and if this is the case, then you might want to prepare ahead by buying a barbeque or saving up for a week's worth of take away.

    Home Improvement Time Frames

One of the most common home improvement project these days is replacement windows and doors. Changing the glass on your windows can boost the energy level of your house, provide your house with a cleaner, crisper look and add more comfort to the area. You can do this project yourself in a weekend or get a contractor to do it. If you are simply replacing old systems with new ones, this can be done in a day or two. If you are having windows customized and the entire layout changed, then this can take a little longer.

Another home improvement project that shouldn't take more than a week or two is painting services. However, this will depend on the weather as well. Wet days will put a stop to the working day and thus if you are trying to paint the house during the rainy season, it might take a little longer to actually get the job done. It is best to do most home improvements during the dry season so you don't risk getting wet. Lots of home improvement jobs can only be done during dry weather from painting to roof repairs and restorations.

Adding any bedroom, bathroom or other addition to your house is going to take a little longer. This goes for indoor and outdoor facilities such as decks, pools and garages. You can expect these projects to take weeks, rather than days to complete but these are fairly substantial home improvements. In some instances entire walls will need to be taken out, floors put in, and roofs added onto - all of these things will take time.

    Talking to Your Contractor

Regardless of how long the home improvement project will take, one thing generally remains the same - the commitment of the contractor to make sure you are not put out. Most contractors will work around your schedule. If you go to work during the day then they will try to work while you are gone and finish by the time you are home.

If this is something that is important to you, then look for a contractor that offers this kind of service. The last thing you want to worry about is the safety and security of your house while you are not there. You also want to be sure that your home doesn't look like a war zone for the next few weeks. All of this is completely understandable which is why asking for a home improvement time frame?and if the home improvement project will take a long time is completely acceptable and recommended.

A free article offers farmers and growers advice on management options for green stink bugs

The green stink bug is one of the most damaging native stink bug species in the United States. Stink bugs feeding on cotton, soybeans, tomatoes, peaches, and other crops can result in cosmetic damage as well as reduced quality and yield.

A new article in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, "Biology and Management of the Green Stink Bug," offers farmers and growers advice on how to deal with this insect pest.

According to the authors, stink bugs have become a major challenge to integrated pest management systems because control options are basically limited to the application of broad-spectrum insecticides such as organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids. However, neonicotinoids are generally effective for control of this stink bug and may be less disruptive to its natural enemies.

Further options for stink bug management that are being explored include the use of trap crops and enhancing beneficial parasitoid populations. Cultural options, including trap cropping and the planting of resistant varieties, have been documented as decreasing crop injury by stink bugs. In addition, there are multiple natural enemies that reduce population numbers.

The authors go on to describe the green stink bug's life cycle, seasonal biology, host plants, and management options such as pheromone trapping, chemical control, cultural control, and biological control.
