Stanford researchers make heart implant powered by radio waves, put batteries out of a job

Batteries used to be the only way to power implantable gadgets, but additional surgeries are needed to replace the power packs once their juice runs out -- a less-than-ideal solution for patients. Recent discoveries, however, have such medgadgets being powered by photons, hip hop and now high-frequency radio waves. Electrical engineers at Stanford built a cardiac device that uses a combination of inductive and radiative transmission of power, at about 1.7 billion cycles per second, to its coiled receiving antenna.

Previous prevailing opinion held that the high frequencies needed for wireless power delivery couldn't penetrate the human body deep enough, and the lower frequencies that would do the trick require antennas too large to work as implants. That conundrum was solved by getting the high-frequency signals to penetrate deeper using alternating waves of electric and magnetic fields. That allowed a 10x increase in power delivery -- up to 50 microwatts to a millimeter radius antenna coil -- to an implant five centimeters below the skin. That antenna also was also designed to pull power regardless of its orientation, making it ideal for applications inside always-moving human bodies. Of course, the implant's really just a proof-of-concept at this stage, but hopefully it won't be long before battery powered implants go the way of the dodo TouchPad.

The church is moving into a building once occupied by St. John's Chapel Baptist Church, said Elder Albertina Colbert.

?We?re dedicating the building back to God to be used for his glory and his service,? Colbert said.

Apostle Raquel D. Broadie will lead the dedication service at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at the church, 2239 Belmeade Dr. Bishop Randy Smith of Greater Hopewell Full Gospel Church in Gastonia will be the guest speaker.

Passengers who took the train between Fez and Marrakech were appalled and enraged at the lack of seats and the derogatory way in which the ONCF employees dealt with them on Monday at the train station in Fez.

At this period of the year, when thousands of people are returning from vacation, one can expect the ONCF to redouble the capacity of its trains and mobilize more personnel in order to provide citizens and tourists with high quality service, especially on weekends. But it seems that customer satisfaction is still not one of the main priorities of the ONCF.

On Sunday Morning, passengers willing to ride the Fez-Marrakech train, which departs at 10.50 am, were prevented from doing so because of the chaos prevailing in the train station, and the lack of professionalism and integrity of some ONCF employees.

The first hurdle that passengers had to overcome in order to secure a ticket was to stand in the queue for about 45 minutes.

There were only two ticket vendors serving more than 200 people while other ONCF employees, at least 6 people, who were behind the counter,? watched carefree passengers who were struggling to get their tickets.

?Outraged by this poor service, passengers decided to go past the line and put pressure on the head of the station in order to expedite the sale of tickets.

To add insult to injury one of the two ticket vendors refused to sell tickets, arguing that there were no available seats on the train and that the only seats available were those of first class.

?The act of refusing to sell tickets, on the pretext that the train is full, is often done by ONCF to force passengers to book in first class or oblige them to get into the train without tickets in order to push them to pay an extra 10% fee,? explained a passenger to MWN correspondent.

Yet, when the MWN correspondent, who went through the same bad experience, got inside the train, he realized that the train was half empty.

This incident comes as a reminder of the dismal quality of the service provided by the ONCF to its customers.

?Before embarking in building high speed trains, the ONCF would better focus on renovating its trains, cleaning the dirty sanitary facilities of the trains and improve the quality of its services to meet the expectations of the passengers,? said a passenger sitting nearby.

Apple has amended a lawsuit they filed back in February against Samsung, and is now including four new devices to the original 17 they say violate their patented technology. The additions are the Galaxy S3 (Galaxy S III), the Verizon specific Galaxy S III, the Galaxy Note, and the Galaxy Note 10.1. These devices will join the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, the Galaxy S II, the T-Mobile Galaxy S II, the AT&T Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Nexus, the Illusion, the Captivate Glide, the Exhibit II 4G, the Stratosphere, the Transform Ultra, the Admire, the Conquer 4G, and the Dart on the smartphone side, and the Galaxy Player 4.0, the Galaxy Player 5.0, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablets.

The patents Apple is claiming are being violated are:

• '647 (Data detector)
• '721 (Slide-to-unlock)
• 172 (Word completion)
• '604 (Universal search)

The "Data detector" patent was successfully used against HTC to block the One X and EVO 4G LTE from import back in December 2011, while the others have been met with limited success around the globe.

The battle between these two is far from over folks -- last weeks news was just the beginning. Expect more as this develops further.
