Samsung, NTT DoCoMo, et al. cancel plans for LTE chip joint venture

ImageLooks like the decision to not make a decision has... well, created a decision. Back in December of 2011, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung and a smattering of other Japanese firms put their heads together in order to launch a joint venture to manufacture and sell ICs for mobile devices. Communication Platform Planning Co. was actually established with the goal to hawk these LTE semiconductors, but now that a consensus on how it'd all play out wasn't reached by the March 2012 deadline, it'll be liquidated in June. Reportedly, DoCoMo even set aside some $5.4 million to set up the now-defunct subsidiary, but now it's all for naught. The entire press release is embedded just after the break, though it's about as light on deets as they come.

(AP) ? It's an ornate but not lavish two-story house tucked away at the end of a mud clogged street. This is where Pakistan's intelligence agency believes Osama bin Laden lived for nearly a year until he moved into the villa in which he was eventually killed.

The residence in the frontier town of Haripur was one of five safe houses used by the slain al-Qaida leader while on the run in Pakistan according to information revealed by his youngest wife, who has been detained.

Retired Pakistani Brig. Shaukat Qadir, who has spent the last eight months tracking bin Laden's movements, told The Associated Press that he was taken to the Haripur house last November by intelligence agents who located it from a description they got from Amal Ahmed Abdel-Fatah al-Sada.

Al-Sada, a 30-year-old Yemeni, has been in Pakistani custody since May 2 when U.S. Navy SEALs overran the Abbottabad compound, killing bin Laden and four other people inside. Since then, Pakistan's intelligence agency, known as the ISI, has been trying to uncover the trail that brought him to Abbottabad villa in the summer of 2005.

The best information appears to have come from al-Sada, who was believed to be his favorite and who traveled with bin Laden since his escape from Afghanistan's eastern Tora Bora mountain range in 2001.

Qadir, a 35-year army veteran who is now a security consultant, was given rare access to transcripts of Pakistani intelligence's interrogation of al-Sada and access to other documents on bin-Laden's movements. He provided the AP with details in a recent interview.

The details of bin Laden's life as a fugitive ? which were first published by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn ? raise fresh questions over how bin Laden was able to remain undetected for so long in Pakistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, despite being the subject of a massive international manhunt.

Yet a senior U.S. official, who is familiar with the contents recovered in bin Laden's Abbottabad house, said there was no evidence that Pakistani officials were aware of bin Laden's presence. "There was no smoking gun. We didn't find anything," he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the contents of the Abbottabad house

According to the interrogation report, bin Laden lived in five safe houses and fathered four children ? the two youngest born in a public hospital in Abbotabad. But investigators have only located the houses in Abbottabad and Haripur.

Al-Sada's descriptions of the homes have been vague and the Haripur house was found only after a series of hits and misses.

She knew only that it was located on the edge of Haripur, it was two stories and it had a basement. It apparently was used by bin Laden while he waited for construction crews to finish his new home Abbottabad, a garrison town just 30 kilometers (20 miles) away.

Investigators scoured the area looking for properties until they found the Haripur house in Naseem Town, a chaotic suburb where relatively affluent houses bump up against sun-baked mud huts that belong to nomadic Afghans.

Like the CIA, the Pakistani agency also tracked the movements of bin Laden's Pakistani courier who used the pseudonym Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti and his brother. The two were ethnic Pashtuns from Pakistan's Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province on the border with Afghanistan. They were bin Laden's front men.

The ISI discovered that the Haripur house, like the land on which bin Laden's Abbottabad villa was built, was rented by two Pashtun brothers claiming to be from Charsadda, a Pashtun dominated town about 110 kilometers (80 miles) away.

The AP located the Haripur house that Qadir said ISI agents had taken him to last November and found the real estate broker, Pir Mohammed, who rented the four-bedroom house to the two brothers, Salim and Javed Khan from Charsadda, for $150 a month.

At the time Pir Mohammed ran a small real estate firm called Mashallah. He said his meeting with the brothers was random.

"They must have seen my sign and come in," Mohammed said, adding that he had met the brothers only three times ? when they signed the contract, when they moved into the house and when they moved out 11 months later.

Two months ago several ISI agents took all the records of the house and its tenants since its construction in 2000, said Qasi Anis Rahman, the brother of the widow who owns the house.

"All they said was that it was for 'security purposes,'" said Rahman.

Al-Sada is currently in Pakistani custody, along with bin Laden's two other wives and several children. They were arrested after the raid. The U.S. Navy SEALs shot al-Sada in the leg during the operation.

Mohammed Amir Khalil, a lawyer for the three widows, said the women would be formally charged for illegally staying in Pakistan on April 2. That charge carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.

Android Central weekly photo contest winner: Flowers

Shalom Veffer

Shalom Veffer; taken with the Samsung Galaxy S II

The winner of this week's photo contest is Shalom Veffer, who gave us this great picture with his Samsung Galaxy S II. We chose it because it's clear, captures the subject perfectly (this week was flowers) and provides a great contrast between the yellow flower and the scrubby landscape behind it. Beautifully composed, Shalom. Be on the lookout for information about your prize!

This week was the hardest ever to decide a winner. There were so many entries worthy of winning, it was hard to even pull out the 10 best let alone decide on a winner. If anyone ever says Android phones don't take excellent pictures, send them my way show I can show them at least a few hundred reasons why they are wrong. And you guys are some very skilled photographers. It's both humbling and awesome to look through them all each week!

We've got a gallery of 10 other awesome shots after the break to look at and enjoy. Keep taking and sending those pictures each week -- you make me love my job.

Chinese PMI Data Sends Investor Sentiment Soaring

The aussie was sent over 100 pips higher at the open on the back significantly better than expected manufacturing PMI data out of China, before retreating slightly. China's official manufacturing PMI figure printed at 53.1 from 51.0 previously, stunning many investors that were expecting the number to slide a little following the drop in the unofficial number from HSBC.

These figures are providing a significant boost for risk sentiment as investors take the opportunity to price in a decreased chance of a hard landing for the Chinese economy. However, we are taking these figures with a grain of salt given the weak private sector PMI data, which highlights the going gap between sentiment in the public and private sectors. Moving into the rest of the year, we expect the weak levels of demand stemming from Europe will continue to weigh on exporters in China, leading to a more domestic demand focused economy. Accordingly, we are looking for some growth supportive policy easing measures from Beijing throughout the rest of 2012, including cuts to the required reserve ratio.

In Japan, the Tankan large manufactures index printed at -4, lower than economists estimates of -1. Non-manufacturing, however, came in line with consensus estimates of 5. USD/JPY shot higher on the back of the data, sending the pair through 83.00.

Looking ahead, we have building approvals out of Sydney at 11:30 local time. Current estimates put the headline figure at +0.5%m/m for March, which is slightly lower than the prior month's 0.9%m/m increase

The Road to Wealth, Revised Edition | 144i.com - The Finance ...

398 of 416 people found the following review helpful

The Road to Wealth is the most comprehensive book I have ever seen about describing the details of terms, practices, tax laws, and legal rights for everthing from credit cards, to filing for bankruptcy, to owning annuities, to setting up housekeeping with someone you?re not married to, to buying long-term care insurance, to avoiding payment of estate taxes.

The book?s list of sections gives you a little flavor of this tremendous scope:

Managing Debt; Financial Intimacy; Home Ownership; Insurance; Paying for College; Retirement Planning; Stocks; Mutual Funds; Bond and Bond Funds; Annuities; and Wills and Trusts.

Ms. Orman has organized the book by putting a brief essay (less than one to about two pages) at the beginning of each section sharing her general views on that subject, then breaks the section into smaller subjects (in Managing Debt, you get different parts of credit cards, student loans, and bankruptcy, for example), and within each smaller section are a series of questions and brief answers. Many of the questions are definitional, and will take you beyond what your dictionary will tell you.

The sections vary a lot in their usefulness. The first one was on credit cards, and was quite well done. But there is almost as much information on filing for personal bankruptcy as there was on credit cards, even though the people who need the latter are only a small percentage of the people who use the former. There is a lot of material, for example, on stocks but it focuses on terms rather than giving you practical advice on how to think about stock investing. It is only two-thirds of the way through the mutual fund section that she points out that indexed funds outperform 85 percent of professional money managers. Most people don?t need to know very much about bonds, bond funds, or annuities, yet there?s a lot of material on those subjects.

These sections could have used much more conceptual material to explain how to select objectives, and pursue them.

In general, I found the material mostly accurate, and seldom in conflict. Here are the kind of problems that you will find. In two parts of the credit card section, you are told two different ways to cancel a credit card account (one says you must write or it does no good, and the other tells you just to cut the cards up and call the company to cancel). Ms. Orman says a lot of nice things about Registered Investment Advisors without pointing out that it takes no training or education or other qualification to become one. In the section on having your home inspected before buying it, she does not point out that most inspectors are in the pockets of the selling agents and will rarely tell you what the bulk of the problems are.

I compared these sections to the best specialist books I had read on the same subjects, and found that only her section on credit cards was as good as a more specialized book. In all other cases, her material was less well developed, less focused, and less helpful.

I also checked to see where I found new information that I had not known before, and found that less than ten percent of the material was new to me. But I do read a lot more finance books than most people, have been an investor for a long time, am an attorney, and have had experience with many of these subject materials.

I thought that the best use of this book was for people who didn?t know where to start, but suspected they needed help. Each section discussed the kinds of professionals and organizations that a person can call on for help, approximately what they do and what they will cost, and how to work with them. I suspect that that?s how most people will be using this book 10 years from now.

A good secondary use is as a source of definitions.

When you buy the book, you also get a free e-newsletter through the end of 2002 to bring you updates on this information. Presumably, you will need to buy that after 2002 if you want to stay up-to-date.

For eighteen year olds with little knowledge of personal economics, this will be a five star book that will make an important difference. It will also be valuable for those who have relied on others to handle their finances in the past, and now want or have to take on that task for themselves. The book will also be a good choice for those who want to learn more about at least two of the major subject areas and feel they know little now. Few will find this book to be a primary guide for making financial investments.

If you find one of these subjects to be valuable after reading hte book, I suggest that you seek out a more specialized book to deepen and focus your understanding of that narrow area.

After you finish examining the many financial angles displayed here, I also suggest that you think about how you can simplify your financial life so that it serves your needs without taking more time than you want to spend.

Mayor: Cranston's finances "stable"

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Cranston Mayor Allan Fung says the city's finances are "stable."

Fung delivered the news in a State of the City address Friday night, his fourth such address since taking office.

"I am proud to report that while other cities around us are on the brink of financial disaster, Cranston is stable," Fung said.

In his remarks, Fung said that despite the city receiving the label of "distressed community" from the state, the city is not in any financial danger.? Despite that, the city will be getting $1.2 million from the state in the upcoming budget year.? Fung proposed to use that money to more fully fund the city's pension system.

Fung also cited reports from several rating agencies that maintain the city's bond rating and financial outlook, despite concerns over the pension system and school department budget.? Those agencies did not downgrade the city's rating in part because of its "healthy" rainy-day fund and plans to deal with those concerns, the Mayor said.

The Mayor hailed recent and planned development in the city, particularly the relocation of Alex and Ani's headquarters, and plans for redevelopment at Garden City.
